Mansion of Yu

Residential Design by Pei Chen Hsieh

The Mansion of Yu is a residential design project that showcases the harmonious combination of different materials and simple techniques. With a focus on creating a vivid visual expression, designer Pei Chen Hsieh has carefully balanced colors and planned the flow of the space. The result is a modern yet comfortable living environment for the client.

The uniqueness of the Mansion of Yu lies in its extension of the high-rising building's style into the interior space. Designer goods from renowned brands such as Philippe Starck, Holly Hunt, and Andre Fu have been used to connect different domains and establish an elegant atmosphere. The flow of the space has been cleverly planned, creating a transparent public area without the use of partitions. Instead, consistent floor sizes and color tones imply the function of each area.

The realization of the design involves the use of dark-colored slabs for the public domain's floor, creating a connection with areas like the living room and dining room. The combination of pure white decorations and furniture adds to the elegant visual perception. In contrast, the ceiling of the study maintains consistent lines with the public areas. The use of smoked white oaks and dark-colored walnuts in the wooden floor and cabinets creates a gentle and modest private domain for the client.

The technical specifications of the design presented challenges, particularly in fitting the circular columns perfectly into the space. In the daughters' bathroom, the designer used Italian Mutina tiles to cover the facades, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere in orange and white. The design also incorporates pure white color, a simple style, and black slabs as key elements.

The Mansion of Yu is a design that not only focuses on aesthetics but also on functionality. The designer has successfully created a wonderland for the client by ensuring that different furniture and materials blend seamlessly. The open design of the public space creates a sense of transparency, complemented by the graceful changes in emotions under the light of the wall lamps.

This project was completed in November 2020 in Taipei City, Taiwan. The design research for the Mansion of Yu involved a composition of pure white color and a simple style. The addition of warm grey wall coverings and low chroma carpets designed by Andre Fu helped reduce the coldness of the space and add warmth. Overcoming challenges such as the lower structure of the building and the establishment of tiles, the designer and client collaborated to achieve a satisfying outcome.

The Mansion of Yu is not only a residence for the client but also a reflection of their aspirations. Through discussions and the incorporation of Mondrian's mismatch techniques and geometric lines, the designer has created a modern style that exudes elegance and coldness. Crystal illuminations designed by Philippe Starck and the presence of a Japanese Black Pine outside the window further enhance the sense of elegance in the space.
